Yes, this is true. The reason behind this is that display models are actually being used, and most tv's have a limited life span, so of they are using it in the store before you get it they have allready used up some if it's life span. I know this is true for the older tv's, which used CRT's. I am not completly sure with the new LCD's and Plasma's. They used the logic I just explained to give you the lower price, so just assume that it won't last as long.

There are two sides to the story.

Yes being on display uses some of the life of TV. But it also weeds out sets that fail from "infant mortality". If you average out how long electronic devices like TVs last, You find that the failure rate is high in the first months of service as marginal parts & workmanship cause failures. After that, the failure rate drops and stays low for a long time.

For an LCD flat panel, the average life of the backlight should be soo long that the benifit of weeding out TVs that fail early is a bigger plus.

Of course, when you talk to the sales guy you don't say that. By laying on the "some of the life is used up" story, you might be able to get them to sweeten the pot by throwing in an extended warrenty in addition to a low price.

Yes and No, Sometimes the TV's are brand new and are returned the day after the original purchase, things like wifes telling their husband to take his new purchase back, but also they are last years models, and they were used everyday on display for 8-12 months, either way they are a hell of a price cut and as long as you buy a warranty you should have nothing to worry about.

I'd be much more interested in the warranty. Plasma and CRT TVs are subject to phosphor burn, however LCD monitors do have lamps. Many of the flat panel manufacturers do not replace screens under warranty, they may replace the entire set. With these sets the warranty is a more important issue.

Buying the display model is like buying used light bulbs.
