The short answer is *YES* it is very rude not to reply to an RSVP. The long answer requires an understanding of french expressions. RSVP a french acronym for "répondez s'il vous plaît" which literally translates to "respond if you please", which sounds like a discretionary request but that's really a problem with taking french literally. In reality the phrase "s'il vous plaît" (SVP) is what the french say for "please". If you want a french waiter to bring you a coffee you'd say "Un cafe s'il vous plaît", hardly a discretionary request to be done whenever if at all. So what does RSVP effectively translate to? It's a strong request to "Respond ASAP". ASAP being english for "as soon as possible". From another angle, it's not a requirement to understand french, the meaning of RSVP, or even agree with anything above, as common sense should prevail. Any invitation should be acknowledged, and not to do so is extremely rude.

Yes most RSVP are requested for a purpose. People go all out for occasions and they need to plan ahead for the meals or the necessities of the party, wedding, showers etc. Its very unkind and thoughtless to just not bother to give your RSVP if you are coming. Its like a kick in the pants for inviting you. Your hosts will appreciate you and want to invite you again, a little bit of kindness and consideration go along way. Be one less problem in the whole scheme of things to help others plan and pull off a great celebration. Gb and Gl

It's always important to RSVP depending on the event. People that offer those kinds of services (wedding, luncheon, fund raiser, etc.) normally charge a per person fee so the persons hosting the event need to plan ahead for this.

I think most hosts would appreciate RSVP just so they have the appropriate resources on hand to accomodate you -- if they requested RSVP and you ignore it (and plan to go), that is rude.

it is definitely rude and disrespectful if you are planning on attending and they request an RSVP..... if you don't send it back, either call the host and apologize and let her know you will be attending or don't go.

Yes it is. It's a simple acknowledgment that you received an invitation and gives the person the ability to plan for your arrival or not. If you show up without responding beforehand, don't expect to be accommodated for, and if you don't respond and don't show up either, don't expect to be invited again to something else.

Yes..it is very hard to decided on how much food, drinks and place settings to put out if you have no idea on how many people are coming.
