I'm not sure exactly HOW inexpensive you mean, but for a really cheap deal, you might want to look into the Kuhio Village Waikiki, which is about a block from the beach and usually starts around $50. It won't be anything special, but it'll be a place to lay your head at night. You can read a review on IgoUgo.com here: http://www.igougo.com/lodging-reviews-b333837-Waikiki-Kuhio_Village.html
For a step up, you'll be looking in the $140-$160 range. You might want to look into the Sheraton Waikiki, the Pacific Beach Hotel, and the Hilton Waikiki. These are all pretty nice, but of course they're going to be more than the first hotel I mentioned.
If you're in the military, definitely to check out the Hale Koa Hotel -- you can probably get a really great rate there (from about $83), and it's really very popular (and with good reason). You do have to be in the armed forces though, so that's the catch.
Hope that gives you some food for thought, anyway. If you want more Waikiki suggestions, check out IgoUgo's Waikiki page, which has reviews on everything from restaurants to nightlife to activities: http://www.igougo.com/travel_guide-l18247-Waikiki_tourism.html
Have a great trip!

We booked the Castle Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki through Expedia for $70 a night! It wasn't a fancy or updated hotel, but the rooms were clean and we were never there anyway as Waikiki Beach was literally a block away. Went to the hotel's pool once the whole trip and it was COLD! It is right in between the two towers and doesn't get much sunlight, so we just went back down to the beach. I would definitely stay there again for the price! Hope that helps!

depends how cheap you're looking at... personally i'd drop the swimming pool as a necessity.. you're in waikiki! go to the beach!!!
there are tons of properties that are beach front, but you can save about $50 a night if you happen to be one block away from waikiki. (an extra 45 sec. walk). the aqua aloha surf was awesome and it included a decent continental breakfast.. i got it for about $85 a night.
