It sounds like your bird is quite content in its setting. This young bird is much too immature to sex correctly. Parakeets, unlike some species, can do fine alone. However, if you want the bird to have a friend, and your cage is large enough, now is the time to do it. Select another bird approximately the same age. You can tell by the horizontal stripes on the head about how old a bird is. If the stripes are gone, it is a mature bird, older than 9-12 months. So choose one that more or less "matches" your bird.

Now that you have a nice pair (2) of parakeets, it is time to train and tame them. Parakeets are by far the easiest of all birds to tame and train. Throw out the rule book and listen to this simple way to train your budgies. That you cannot train 2 birds living together amounts to nothing more than an old wives’ tale.

If the wings aren't clipped that is a necessity. Once you have that done, you can have them hand tamed in less than 10 minutes. One bird at a time, get one out and make it walk up your fingers. Keep doing it .If it jumps off, get it back on your finger, Continue until you exhausted the bird. You can tell when the bird is tired -- it starts panting. At that time, put him/her on an perch in a room away from the cage. If it jumps off, put it back on.

Repeat for the second bird, but not where bird #2 can see you. When you have worn it down, put on the perch with the first. Continue daily for about a week, or until the birds are both staying on the perch without jumping off. . They soon realize they can't fly and quit trying. You will be able to handle them, they will eagerly await being taken out of the cage, and once trained, they will not leave the perch.

They sell "playpens" for parakeets that they really enjoy. It gives them the freedom of being out of the cage, but with things to do.....climbing ladders, ringing bells, etc. Avoid mirrors! The birds will be much happier and you will enjoy them so much more. You won't believe it’s this easy until you do it!.

Good luck, and please don't hesitate to email me if I can help you. I'll do my best!

If you want a friendly, loveable pet, then don't get another parakeet (at least not one who will share the same cage in the same room as this one).

Your parakeet needs YOUR attention and affection. If you get another bird, the two birds will bond, and you won't have that pet.

It takes time and patience to become friends with your parakeet... there is a lot of information about them on the internet. You could do a search for:

BUDGIE CARE
TAMING A BUDGIE
CARE AND FEEDING BUDGIES

I'm sure you will find loads of information! take care

First of all, please use good grammar. And what's with the "WELL GOOD BYE"? It's not like you're leaving.

Second of all, if your budgie is still a baby, it's not very easy to tell the gender. Wait until it is at least a year old, and that's when you can tell. Unless your budgie is a recessive pied, then the general rule is blue cere = male, brown/pink/tan cere = female.

You should get him a variety of toys though. You can also make some toys. Birds love paper. Just give it a piece of folded up white printer paper and see if it will have fun chewing it up. Or even popsicle sticks, my cockatiel loves chewing them. Just experiment and see what kind of toy it likes: chewables, hard toys, or noise-making toys.

Have you socialized with you bird at all?
Have you sat next to its cage and talked with it or tried to feed it treats between the cage bars? Your bird doesn't need another bird friend, it needs YOU to be its friend. YOU need to keep it from being lonely.

Does your bird come out of its cage or can it step up?
If not, read this page:

http://cockatielcottage.net/bite2.html

If the bird doesn't bite, skip to the Step-Up' part.

If you want a FRIENDLY LOVABLE PET, you have DEVOTE TIME AND LOVE to your bird. The more time, patience and love you give it, the more friendly and lovable it will become.

He is a boy, his beak will get more and more blue the older he gets. He is probably okay. If he has a lot of toys and interaction with you then he should be fine. I wouldn't suggest a playmate because two males may fight and a male and a female may breed. Good luck, I'm sure your bird is okay.

Yes, get him a friend. In the meantime, get him a parakeet mirror so he can at least see and talk to himself. I've had keets for years, and they do best with a partner (of the same sex). It's hard to tell the sex without seeing it, since the differences are so subtle. Maybe take a pic and bring it with you to the pet shop so they can get you the the proper sex. Good luck!

don't worry so much about the toys, sometimes they won't play with toys for a like a year and one day they will start playing. keep the toys until he plays and starts destroying them, then buy new ones.

don't get a mirror. those will make them crazy when they bond with the mirror and not with you. you want him to bond with you.

take it out of the cage, put it on your shoulder, walk around with it, watch TV with it. birds like when you are active. so do somthing with your hands (like wash dishes) with the bird on your shoulder. they tend to climb down and start biting whatever it is you are doing with your hands so don't let it do that if you're washing dishes, lol. but if yoiu're paying the bills it might climb down and start biting the papers. You can also just try playing with bird toys yourself to let it come down and play with them, but this has never worked for me, ever. My birds only do stuff with me that i don't want them to do, such as pay bills! birds repeat actions, not just words, and whatever the birds sees you do, it will want to do too. just keep the bird with you (wings clipped).

3months is not to be worried about for this. But it is time to let the bird out of the cage and interact with it.

UNLESS he is sitting PUFFED OUT and ON BOTH FEET. then he might be sick!!!! if that's the case take him to a vet. (one foot and puffed out is ok, sick birds don't sit on only one foot)
