Definitely

Linux versions are becoming more and more user-friendly. I've been able to get most windows applications and games working in Linux. The open source software is amazing.
It won't be long before big software developers like adobe start making products for Linux.

I have no need for windows anymore, I have a Vista Cd that will likely just sit there forever.

I'm thinking of pulling a prank on my friend, he wants me to put Vista on his computer. I'm going to put Linux on it and tell him it's Vista. Then I'll wait and see how long it takes him to figure out it's not.

Yes.

In the same vein, there is this Nexenta coming up very good. That is a Solaris kernel with all the userland programs taken from Debian's library of software packages.

Then there still seems to be some life lingering in the Hurd development efforts.

What all these represent is, Linux or Solaris or Hurd is just the engine of a car that is the OS. The remaining parts of the car still comes from FSF. The toolchain or shell or grep and sed and such are no less important than the engine that is the kernel.

So it should be seen as a GNU revolution with a Penguin eye, Sun eye and GNU eye as the three foci of power at the moment. It might change in the future. But the GNU's shadow will be felt for a long time to come.

Today's most popular Linux distros are becoming a viable alternative to Vista and OS X, for all uses other than Gaming:

1. Because they are much more user friendly than older Linux versions.

2. Runs on older hardware almost as fast as Vista on state of the art hardware and most drivers are built-in.

3. Free and many can run as a "Live CD" so you can try before you install on your hard drive (as a dual-boot with Windows).

4. Viruses, and all other malware is not a problem.

5. Because you ARE learning a new OS, there's a slight learning curve, but there is LOTS of help out there on the web.

If you are comfortable with Windows you may just like Linux. Ubuntu is a good starting point. I'm liking LinuxMint, too.

I think it is, as there is much more (at least online) publicity for distros like Ubuntu and gOS, which are pretty simple to set up and use. The thing is that most people still don't know what Linux is, and as they find out about, some people will try it out, tell their friends and such. I've got one of my friends using it now and built my mom a computer running Ubuntu. It works great for her since she pretty much just uses it for e-mail and photos.

Out of the top 500 (fastest) computers only two or three run on windows. Rest run on linux/unix.

Servers too, run mostly on linux/unix. desktop computing, I do'nt care, it's based on ease of use, popularity blah blah blah.

A popular OS is good for some business but not all. Every OS has it's own great features.

Linux will become more popular when more hardware vendors start producing drivers for the hardware. For many, looking all over the net trying to find drivers for their hardware is a large pain in the neck.
