It is 'just' an artistic tool like painting or sculpting. Not as big an item as it used to be.

The Romans were pretty amazing at it and many mosaics survived. They artistically rival any other art object that survived the ages. Byzantine mosaics are also among the most elaborate and amazing pieces or art in the realm of architecture.

it is creating, a new one from the old one, you create it to make that thing a brad new item, it is showing how to be creative, and artisitic you are. :)
