I just bought a 98 Maxima Gxe Automatic 107k miles. I noticed the overdrive does not work even though the switch works. the light goes on and off but no engine response. my rpm is too high at high speeds. my guage hits 3500 at 70mph. could you tell me what is wrong and how to fix it?

it could be a sensor I would have it put on a diagnostic to find out, if it isn't a sensor then it is probably a transmission problem and usually without rebuilding it there isn't an easy fix

Count the shifts Nissan RE4F04A trans has 4 speeds, 1 to 1 third gear and .6 to one over drive 3,500 rpm really does not sound like 3rd. With only 3.0 liters to work with do you feel the 250 prm drop when the torque converter clutch engages? Not much you can do externally to fix the OD problem if there is actually no forth gear except replace the trans and flush any metal out of the radiator cooler. I replace radiators with each new reman unit I install. E-mail me with more details if you want.

Are you saying it sticks in 3rd gear. Here is a breakdown. you have 1st, 2nd, Drive, then Overdrive. Basically, 1st,2nd,3rd,and 4th. If it is sticking in 3rd a gear in the tranny is stripped.
