I just have to clear something up for you real quick. IF you do decide to go, I would advise that you never EVER AGAIN use the term "drill sergeant" in conjunction with the Marine Corps. They are called "Drill Instructors." Second, you don't go on a forced march/hump on the first day. You will go on several humps each longer than the last so you can get somewhat acclimated to the situation. When I was in Boot Camp it never really occurred to me to fail. The wrath of my Drill Instructors was enough motivation that failure was never a viable option. If you are having doubts, be careful...this is a MAJOR commitment and should not be taken lightly.

Good Luck!

Melvin...are you SERIOUS? This isnt the stone age!

Okay. When I was in Basic had three hump (forced marches) in it. 4, 6 and 8 Miles. Then, for those of us that went Infantry, it was 10, 15 and a 20 mile hump. Well, my little brother just finished all of his pre-Iraq training and fly off today, and they no longer do those long humps. Same number, just not in miles...its in kilometers. Which I can understand, since we are a mechanized military now more than ever...so I wouldn't sweat the humps.
As for the screaming Drill Instructors...don't sweat that either. Its only during Basic. When that's done, unless you are a total screw up, the yelling stops. During Basic, the worst part is in the beginning, as you know very little of what is expected from you. The quicker you learn and show your compentency, the less likely you are going to be yelled at. So literally, the smarter you are the better off you are. Unless you were like me. One of our Green Belt DI's realized he hadn't yelled at me in weeks (why the hell he had an apiphany like that I will never know...the man must have been in league with Satan) so he took the liberty of yelling at me and thrashing me for a couple hours on the quarter deck. It was different knowing I wasn't in trouble...it kinda made it fun...and of course another opportunity to show my worth.
Don't sweat it, as you will live through like everyone else before you and will proudly carry the name Marine into the next generation.

Good Luck

you dont do twenty mile marches in bootcamp anymore. The longest one I had was 13 miles and that was broken up throughout the day during the crucible. And as for the Drill Instructors, thats part of what makes us Marines. If you cant hack it then go join the army or the navy. Marines are tested by the hottest fires of hell and tempered with the strongest steels known to man. Its what we are, because of what we do and what we have overcome.

All of the services have the exercise and drill instructors theme at boot camp. With that attitude you would probably be best off joining the Girl Scouts.

Drill sergeants aren't angry. They are there to teach and mold. Part of their duty is to weed out the weak.

Start exercising now. Ask your recruiter for guidance on preparing for boot camp; the guidance will be given gladly. They want you to succeed.

20 miles isn't really that long; you'll see.

If you're not able/willing to hump 20 miles (with pack or not), join another branch or stay home.

However, if you're worried about your physical limitations, boot will make a stronger man out of you.

I joined and I'm an Air Traffic Controller, in shape, stronger mentally and sociably, and looked up to by family. so if you want to better yourself then join. at least put the minimum in 4 year term.

If you don't want to do all that, then you don't really want to join the Marine Corps.
