i have 2 cats that stay inside. their litter box is stinking up the whole house. i do not want to put them outside but what can i do. i use arm and hammer kitty litter now. they eat only dry cat food (9 lives). i clean their box every day. i am thinking about getting a 2nd litter box thinking that this might help them bury the smell better. i dont know what else to do. please help!! any suggestion.

I have a really easy solution for this... had the same problem, so I sprinkled arm and hammer baking soda in the bottom of the pan of their litter box.....then I used a big black trash bag and placed the pan inside the bag..... then I filled the pan with the trash bag over it with my usual kitty litter that I think works better than any other--multiple cat formula (with the blue label) Tidy Cat---when my cat goes, I never smell it anymore...and when the box needs changed (believe it or not--once a week)-- I just pulle the bag off the pan and toss it. The baking soda is still in place and is usable for several weeks. Never an odor anymore.... try it and see if it works for you......(if you have two cats, two boxes might help....but also get a food that is formulated to help the ph balance of cat urine).....

The litter box is really only half the issue. What goes *into* it is the other half.

Grocery store types of food (like 9 Lives and Friskies) contain needless additives just to make them palatable. If the cat thinks the food tastes good then not only do they eat a lot of it but they produce a lot of waste, and you're fooled into thinking they have a healthy appetite when all they're really doing is craving the additives the same way humans crave things that are bad for us like...say...french fries. Additives (and french fries) are *not* healthy nutrition, and the evidence is in the litter.

Switch your cats over to a higher quality food that's available only at pet supply stores or through your veterinarian. Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet, Innova, Blue Buffalo and Purina Pro Plan are some of the best ones right off the top of my head, although there are plenty more excellent brands to choose from. They contain high quality ingredients which are more readily absorbed by the cat, causing them to eat less food and still be satisfied. They in turn will produce less waste, and--here's the important part--their waste will smell less horrid. As an added benefit your cats' overall health will improve.

Honest. What goes in must come out, you know? Healthy in, healthy out. It works and you won't for a moment regret spending a little extra on the quality foods.

Scoop any used litter as soon as you see that it's been disturbed. DO NOT put it into the kitchen garbage, that's going to intensify the smells! I keep an old cat food bag that's plastic, put the used litter into that and take it out to the garbage outside once a day. With plastic it won't weaken the bottom and open up, dumping it on the floor as you try to move it.

This works for us, we have 4 cats, and no cat smell. I don't think I spend more than 45 seconds cleaning the box each day--it's quickly done and all you do is make sure to keep an eye on the box to see if the litter is disturbed or not.

First of all I keep the litter box in the restroom that nobody uses that way I can turn on the vent to take out the poop smells. Second of all I have the litter box that has the top over it....and with that note I bought one of those Lysol Automatic sprayer things that sprays every 7 minutes and placed it on top of the box. So having the door cracked open enough for the cats to go in and use the restroom I dont have to worry about the smell anymore...I pretty much keep the fan on all the time to suck out any stink before it gets past the door...the only smell I smell coming from the restroom is the Lysol.

Have you tried different kitty litters? I have tried every type available to me, the crystals, pellets, arm and hammer, cheap stuff, and none worked well...the one we stick with is the multi cat clumping cat litter called max scoop, the blue one for multiple cats plus we get the sprinkable arm and hammer stuff for litter boxes to sprinkle in and mix in. I have two cats and one is a really smelly boy and this is the only litter I have found that works well.

I have four cats and my house doesn't smell. The most important thing is the litter. You need to use the scented clumping (scoop) litter. Ordinary litter always retains smells- to get rid of it you have to switch. It will definitely eliminate the odor as long as you frequently scoop out the clumps of kitty waste.

I have 2 cats and 2 litterboxes. I use the clumping litter and have no smell. As soon as I see that a litterbox has been used, I scoop it out and flush it down the toilet or put it in a plastic bag and take it to to garbage bin.

I have three cats and i clean the litter everyday.I also keep it in the basement. If cleaning it once a day is not working then try twice a day or you could get one of the self cleaning ones they clean a couple minutes after the cat uses it.

get another litter box, and you might what to switch to a higher quality food (they don't poop as much) also we use one of those air wick automatic sprayers and that helps, have you considered moving your litter box to a closet?? I used to keep mine in the hall closet with the door cracked it helped with this smell a lot

There is a new microchip cat flap that might make you feel better about your cats going outside because it stops them going out at night (if you want it to) have a look at:
