Don't worry about skill level, just give me some songs.
I have a wide range in taste too, so don't worry about that either.

Since we ve ended as lovers by Jeff Beck

Tears in heaven Eric Clapton

all of these song teach fundamental and techniques ulilitzed on other tunes.

Metallica songs are ok buy a bit morbid and depressing, Joe satriani songs are ok, but extremely difficult. Anything classical is very inpressive to people when you play.
Good luck

the father of blues guitar was robert johnson, and probably every serious guitar player should have at least one of his songs in their repertoire. you'd need to get hold of some tab somewhere, but 'crossroads' is a masterpiece both lyrically and as a piece of music, while 'come on in my kitchen' offers challenges that you will not overcome in a lifetime of playing. (you should at least listen to both pieces).

if skill level really is not an issue, what about some john dowland? 'fine knacks for ladies' is as great in its way as 'crossroads', and 'mistress winter's jump' is one of the few guitar instrumentals which nobody would ever dare set words to.

either John the Fisherman, or Smoke on the Water. Both are easy but yet teach the basics of string crossing, chords, and musical cross tones!

Sonata Arctica - Kingdon For A Heart
Jack Johnson - Bananna Pancakes
Or anything by him.
The best one (i'd personally LOVE to be able to know how to play) is 'Where is my mind' by the pixies. its the song at the end of fight club.
