The rulers sneered at Jesus and said,
"He saved others, let him save himself
if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God."
Even the soldiers jeered at him.
As they approached to offer him wine they called out,
"If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."
Above him there was an inscription that read,
"This is the King of the Jews."

Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying,
"Are you not the Christ?
Save yourself and us."
The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply,
"Have you no fear of God,
for you are subject to the same condemnation?
And indeed, we have been condemned justly,
for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes,
but this man has done nothing criminal."
Then he said,
"Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
He replied to him,
"Amen, I say to you,
today you will be with me in Paradise."

One sinner was selfish and looking out for himself and was hoping for a miracle to happen and save him from his punishment. The other sinner, come to know he was a sinner, and needed and wanted forgiveness for his sins and crime. He saw Christ as who He truly is, and he rebuked the first sinner for his words. Jesus saved the second one and the first one probably went to hell's punishment.

This isn't a homily, it's a scripture text.

It is a scripture reading oddly placed at this time of year, but the reading often falls on this Sunday, called Christ the King Sunday or The Reign of Christ Sunday.

It reminds us that Jesus' reign was not yet meant to be over an earthly kingdom. Of the two thieves crucified on either side of him, one of them understood this, and asked Jesus to "remember me when you come into your kingdom," correctly understanding that Jesus WAS a King, with a very real kingdom, just not on this earth. The other thief, like some religious leaders of Jesus' day, incorrectly thought Jesus was seeking an earthly power, and didn't have the faith to be received into Jesus' kingdom.

Hope that helps!

This is a Gospel reading. A homily is the sermon a priest gives to explain the readings. This gospel means that a person who has done wrong in this life, but who freely admits the wrong and believes in God, can go to heaven. God grants forgiveness to the truly repentent.

I believe the criminal was asking the King of Glory for forgiveness. Jesus told him he would go to Heaven (paradise). Christ took our punishment on the cross to pay for the sin of the world.

The Pharisees and the Romans thought Jesus should prove himself to them by saving himself. They did not realize that Jesus had to die in order to save us. Just like a lot of people they wanted proof instead of having faith.

That's not a homily. That's a Scripture reading from the Gospel of St. Luke/

Jesus knew He had to die on the Cross so that ALL who will believe in His Death - Burial - Resurrection have eternal life with Him in heaven. The bystanders, gawkers and roman soldiers had their own uninformed opinions and voiced them.

Just what it says. The other criminal repented at the last moments of his life, and was allowed to go to heaven. The same is true for us today.

Simply put, one of the two thieves Jesus was cricified with realized his spiritual condition, and Jesus saw his conviction and forgave him- thus "Today you will be with Me in paradise."

i heard that today in church, it means that since jesus loved us so much he died for us, even when everyone was tempting him to save himself, it also means that the criminal that wished to be with jesus was reflecting upon his behavior.
