Why was that joke invented- i don't get it- was it like the first joke made- and i really don't think its funny- so why is it a joke???

In Larry Golnick's "Cartoon History of the Universe", he mentions how early language developed among cavemen. After statements of fact, there came the first questions ("What you do with my daughter last night!?"), the first lies ("Ummm ... nothing!"), and the first jokes (1st caveman: "Why chicken cross road?" 2nd caveman: "Hmph -- that old one already!").
