I can look at my pictures and everything but when i try to use the screen it says ACCESS and the lens goes all crazy. Ive tried holding the power button down for 30 seconds with the battery taken out and ive also tried emptying my memory card...one of it works. it used to work every now and then. it would do this for about 20 min and then it would be fine but suddenly its been a week and its not working. ive hit it onmy palm a couple times and that used to work but none of that works anymore! What can i do?

i agree that you need to send it in for repairs. digital cameras are not like lamps. you can't easily take them apart and repair it yourself. they need specific tools and parts.

I had a similar problem. The lens would pop in and out. I tried going by the manual and online help at sony to no avail. Since it was past warranty, I brought it in to the Sony approved repair shop (check their website). The fee to have a technician look at it was 35$, and then to repair it would have been 160$ to 180$.
I opted to go to my local electronics store and upgraded to a DSC-W55 (7.2mp) for 200$ (they have 4 different colours).
I kept the battery and charger of my dsc-w50, cause they are still good for my new camera.
So my suggestion: if you can afford the technician fee for the repair shop, have them take a look. If the estimate is too expensive, buy a new one that you can keep the battery (those things cost over 50$) and the memory card. You could invest in another brand, but if you are like me, you love your cybershot.

R.I.P. Sony Cybershot DSC-W50. You can use it as a paperweight. Repairs will likely cost more than a new camera so you may as well begin shopping.

Helpful hint: Digital cameras are rather delicate. Hitting it against anything - even your palm - is a bad idea.
