When you ask a question like this you're going to get a load of different answers - many of them conflicting. Most people will automatically recommend their own favourite.
Buy a copy of What Home Cinema magazine and read their reviews. Then you can make your mind up.
Better still, go to a good shop (not Curry's Digital or Comet) and compare the sets on display. Then get an assistant to describe the features of each so that you can narrow down to the set which closest matches your requirements (most shop assistants in Curry's or Comet have the technical knowlege of a dormouse and will feed you 'duff gen').
I recommend a visit to your nearest branch of John Lewis for best unbiassed and well-informed advice. Their prices are competitive too.

I only decided to answer this question because of the answers you have been receiving. You must not trust your eyes in the electronic stores (best buy, circuit city, etc) because they fool you by setting up the most expensive models to appear to have the highest image quality. Of course, this is not very ethical, but you do not know which store is doing it and which store isn't.
Read professional, unbiased reviews. Consider the sources and if they are being sponsored or bribed. Be skeptical my friend, they are after your money and will do anything to get it. I'm currently shopping for a new tv myself. Good luck.

Sony XBRs. Just freakin awesome pictures.
Go in your local electronics superstores and look at the wall of plasma and LCDs. Just look for the best looking picture. I bet you when you walk up to it to look at the make and model, it will be a Sony XBR.
