Some remained on the farms from which they'd been freed. Others migrated north to cities like Detroit and Chicago, looking for factory work. The north was far more industrialized than was the south. The south was very much aggricultural. Having moved north, most found the going not so easy and acceptance less than hospitible. They took up work where ever they could find it. Shoe repair, factory work, ganitorial, you name it.

After the Civil War most of the freed slaves stayed on the land. Share cropping took the place of the plantations, but both were labor intensive. The northern migrations didn't really start till the beginning of the 20th century.
A significant number of freedmen migrated west, filed land claims, and became farmers.
The really interesting thing is how fast a parallel society came into being. In a very short time most communities had black hotels, black newspapers, restaurants, etc. Many owned by blacks. So the answer is, they did what everyone else does.
