I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I work for a Hospice acute in patient unit at the local hospital and all cases are individual. There is no set time frame and we have had some patients for a very long time. Even in our unit we often see patients for symptom management and then send them back home when they feel better. The criteria for Hospice eligibility is based on many things but there really isn't any way anyone can tell you exactly how long it will be. You should talk with the Hospice doctors or nurses and they can give you a better idea of what to expect and sometimes give you an approximate timetable based on experience. Be assured that paliative care from a reputable hospice will not hasten death but just provide pain management and support. I hope you can find peace in whatever the outcome and the support that you need.

I am sorry about your maw maw :( Hospice has no real time frame-typically it is when a life limiting illness is expected to take the person in 6 months or less-but mom had ALS and they had NO IDEA how long she would live and they gave her hospice. Go tot his site and read about it more http://www.hospicenet.org/html/faq.html
I agree with the other answer to get as much info from her as you can-I have a question for my mom everyday and I wish I had asked-i know it makes it seem more real-but you will be so glad you did!

Hospice can last for a while or for no time at all as it greatly depends on why she is in hospice care and how far advanced it is. Regardless, there is no way of telling how long. Just enjoy the time you have with her, make memories and make her as comfortable as possible. If you are having trouble with letting her go or grieving, contact a free grief counseling group through the hospice or in your area (the hospice folks should have some referrals).

It means her time to exit is near.
Could be a couple of weeks at most.
In hospice they tend to clean her up to receive company and they will give her all the painkillers she wants.
Beleive it or not, she will get a lot of rest and will look really good when you go to see her.
Please understand that her passing will be painless and will also be a relief. She will simply step away and go into God's Light. After she checks in with God, she can come back and visit with her family, attend her funeral, and all that other stuff.

Awww - so sorry for you and your family. Usually when the doctor refers a patient to hospice, it means they have less than 6 months. Use this time to ask your grandma any questions about when she was growing up, who those people are in all those old pictures that no one but her recognizes, etc. and WRITE IT DOWN! I wish I had done that with my grandmother, but she died unexpectedly and I never had the chance. Spend as much time with her as you can - god bless.
