When they are both made obsolete by the next best thing. I think the smart money will continue to enjoy the amazing quality of DVD, for a bit longer.

I hope it will not be over soon - competition is good or consumers.
HD-DVD went down in price to the price point of regular DVD players - under $200 and 5 free movies.
I do not think it will go down in price much more...
Blu-Ray is about $400 plus 5 free movies - will probably catch up with HD prices in a few months.

It is still better (and cheaper) to buy two separate players than the universal one - universals still had some issues... and they cost $1000.

Never. They both will just fade out and get replaced by some other new technology. Till then, DVD will remain. Another unlikely future maybe that they'll co-exist with common players without the user knowing.

By the way, I have long thought of buying a SACD or DVD-Audio player but have not bought any and I still listen to CD's.

Hi .It is quite possible that the "war'' will continue indefinitely. Until high definition REPLACES standard DVD. At the moment Blu-ray and HD DVD are only an OPTION.

cheapest will win in the end it always does betamax was better but vhs was cheaper (who won) laser disc was better picture than dvd but dvd was smaller and cheaper to produce (who won) blu ray is higher spec but hd dvd is easier and cheaper to produce as it follows the same components as standard dvd (who will win)
