The doctors used to say "get a humidifier"...back in the 70's. That was before research shows that dust mites, a major contributor to allergy symptoms, need at least 50% humidity to reproduce, so adding humidity is not the way to go. HEPA filtering is a godsend to some allergy sufferers because it filters out mold spores, pollen, dust and even dust mites.

You know that fiberglass filter people use for their furnace intake vents? I found that putting in a HEPA filter (I found that 3M Filtreat brand filters has the best variety of sizes) in place of the cheap fiberglass filter is more effective that a small stand alone HEPA purifier because the furnace fan pushes the air through the entire house when it is on. Even when the Central Air Conditioner is on, the same furnace fan is used to push the air around. A small stand alone HEPA purifiers only cleans the air well in a small room. Larger stand alone HEPA purifiers do a good job in a large room, but they are not cheap.

A humidifier would NOT be good as it could produce mold spores. If you want to try the hepa filter give it a try but avoidance { of what one is allergic to } is the best medicine when it comes to managing allergies .

Since you mention allergies, I would go with the air purifier. And make sure he gets lots of hot drinks so the steam can give him some humidity, and the liquid will keep him from dehydrating.

Good luck!
