You mean the chihuahua? The best breeds that are small are the Boston Terrier, the Pug, The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Shih Tzu, the Tibetan Terrier, and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. But if you see a mix in a shelter, you should go for it! Shelter dogs are great!

I think the best dogs are Shihtzus - they are the most even tempered out of all of the small dogs. After that come the yorkies and poodles - but they can get crabby with age. Bichons and Cavaliers are both VERY energetic dogs. They arent' bad dogs - but their energy often turns a lot of people off. Bichons can be affordable, but Cavaliers are usually very expensive. I would recommend vising your local shelter. They will have small breed dogs. Adults are great - you can find one that is already house trained and kid friendly. With small breed dogs though, you MUST use a crate or they will never be house trained (take them outside regularly to go to the bathroom) and just put them in the crate when you can't watch them closely. An adult dog (they do have puppies) you can check their temperament. Will they allow you to take away their food? Can you turn it over and hold it upside down? How does it feel about being restrained - can you touch its feet for a nail trim or ears to apply meds when restrained? Have it on a leash in a large area and have someone jog up to it. Does it happily greet the person or does it cower away or growl? Our shelters are full right now - and the animals desperately need help! There is nothing wrong with adopting a mix breed dog from a shelter. They're not as expensive as the $1000 bichons and cavaliers and they can make great dogs. Best wishes and enjoy your new dog! EDIT: If you do end up buying from a breeder - search far and wide for a breeder that has kids! The breeders that don't have kids keep their puppies crated most of the time and really aren't that well socialized. When breeders have kids - the puppies can't help but be socialized.

All dogs who are socialized properly/raised properly are children friendly and have been around children. Yes children do grab and pull fur, move real quickly, make loud noises abruptly which can all be a rather scary situation for any animal that has not been socialized properly.
Then again children must learn rules around the animal as well. Teaching children to be calm and quiet and using slow movement around dogs is less threatening. And always supervise children around dogs who temperaments could be questionable like food and toy aggressions.

Terriers and beagles are very friendly.
It depends on the children, they're age mainly. I would have to say that it truly doesn't matter.
If it is a puppy you are adopting, it can adapt and be a great pet. If its older, you can just observe how your children and the dog interact.

I just got a beagle and she is great. My sister is 6 and she plays with her just fine. The only thing is you need a fenced in yard or have them on a leash at all times when theyre outside.

Mini-schnauzer. I highly recommend them if you have kids, but want something small. They are friendly, intelligent, and easy-going. Most small dogs are yippy, tempermental, and not child-friendly.

shitzus, llasa apso, pomeranian. beagles (although they are very stubborn and head strong), jack russels (might be too hyper for little kids). go on yahoo animals and search the different dog breeds. they tell you all about them.

I think beagles would be your best bet. Boston's are good with kids but most are so hyper that if you mix them with hyper kids you have a huge migrain headache. But most beagles are pretty laid back.
