I am looking through the site and I see so many answers to religous questions that aren't answers. They are just put downs and insults. Why are some people so narrow-minded that they can't see another person's point of view as a valid point? After all no argument of religion could ever be resolved completely. And why just we all just respect each other's diverse opinions.

Further this is not a question about non belief and belief. It is a question about being civil to one's fellow man. There are people of all belief systems that respect others of different opinions.

Does this not demonstrate to you the (unnecessary) divisiveness that religion causes?

Actually you might see the same thing in all the answers. People are either really being rude or they're just joking. And, if people are taking these rude answers personally, they might need to check themselves. Life's too short to get upset over some response from some bloke you'll never meet.
But, if you want to know why people are so intolerant in general, I'd have to say that they're taught to be that way by intolerant parents. How many parents simply guide, tolerate, respect, and love their children? Many people grew up being disrespectfully corrected all the time, and those same people think they have to disrespectfully correct others.
And then there are religions that teach that other religions are wrong and that the followers are going to hell or something like that. That just encourages intolerance for some, or it at least makes some people feel superior or that they need to save others, and that can lead to others thinking that person is being intolerant.
And really all any of us can do is accept others the way they are even if they're being disrespectful and intolerant. That's a big part of most religions anyways.

A very good question, and most answers ,so far ,revealed good intention to work on what u asked about ,me too, but my answer is may be every one imagine that the other hates him,may be every one wants to convince the other with his religion ,and may be people don't like what they don't know.and some think that they are saving each other but of course not those who insult and FINLAY if GOD wants all the people to be with one religion sure able to do.
Let 's have an agreement in this site to respect each others diverse opinions and instead of being hurt and be hurt ed be brothers and sisters with all different religions and nationalities,ok?i agree

John,

You raise a valid point. Personally I get very disgusted and at times just plain pissed off at the way people behave in R & S. There are stupid postings, offensive postings, bashing by both athiests and evangelical Christians. It all gets very tiresome. I think there should be a rule here that questions and responses be respectful. No bashing tolerated PERIOD. I spend time here because I have an MA in Religious Studies. I want to be able to share what I have learned with others. Alas, I do get fed up with the bad behaviour. I think a lot of people who post here should just damn well grow up. If you can't ask an intelligent question or post and intelligent answer, in my opinion you should just sod off elsewhere. Thank you for your question. It is certainly worth reflecting on.

Peace,

VB8

I agree with you John. I am a Catholic (not the best Catholic by any means) but I always respect what others believe. I'm not one to tell people they're wrong because I don't think that what a person believes is wrong. It's just different. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't like to insult people but it seems that there are a helluva lot of people in here that do, regardless of the question. Some people just like to insult others who can't defend themselves. That is cowardice, plain and simple.

Ah you've noticed this also......I've come to the conclusion that some people are not as open minded as they pretend to be, not do others want to be. As for respect, that seems to be something that today's society is seriously lacking. I just ignore them and try to give an educated answer.

Listen, the Christians on this site are so nice and accomodating to all of the garbage thrown at them. It makes me proud to be called a Christ follower. All we do is answer the questions that, quite frankly, are meant to be rude or insulting, in hopes of sharing what God is doing in our lives that make Him real to us. All we ever receive is curt one line answers from the enlightened police. They are so scared to get reported, but they can't help themselves from saying things that are inappropriate. Hang in there Brothers and Sisters, even if one finds Jesus it has been worth it!

Most people here believe that they are the only ones "worshiping" God as they believe is the correct way and that everyone else should be worshiping as they do. In a sense, the way they believe is right for themselves; they don't realize that it isn't for everyone else, therefore, disrespecting all other's beliefs.

I'm sorry for giving a rude answer to your kind question about rudeness, but religion is for people who are weak in mind and spirit. People who have any amount of strength of character are not religious; they are spiritual. The modern "practice" of religion is nothing more than a person buying into a set of superstitions in the hope that "God" will take sympathy on them. Any conflicting set of superstitions are inherently wrong to these weak-minded, superstitious people.
Seek to strengthen your spirit. Avoid all religions. If you must feel anything at all toward religious people, feel pity for their lack of strength and moral fiber.

Unfortunately, one religion here claims that their god commands them to witness to unbelievers. With this understanding, it makes it difficult for them to respect or even tolerate other's diverse opinions, since they claim their interpretation as the only truth.

I'm trying as hard as I can with both atheists and theists to be forthright yet respectful, and even funny, but apparently I'm failing. Sigh...it's just like junior high again. I'll work on it, okay?
