I dont know how to read music. my boyfriend has started to learn piano at the same time, he says it will help... good idea or not? I also would like to teach myself, to be able to say "hey, i did that" like a little kid, and be proud of myself.

Find a good beginner's manual, such as what Hal Leonard or Mel Bay offers, that has instructions on tuning, holding, caring, and then playing chords, basic music theory, and simple notated songs. Then follow the steps below.

I've decided to learn to play guitar too. I've taught myself other instruments so I figured I'd add this one to the list. Just know that it takes patience, time, & a lot of practice to get anything down. Your first step is to become familiar with what you're looking at... the music. Learn how to read tabs and learn the differences between all types of guitars so you'll know which one fits you. After deciding on the look and getting used to reading music learning the guitar and playing it comes next. I'm no pro, just someone who's determined to master many instruments. I picked up a guitar book and it seems to be working fine for me. I've also learned a few things from some online lessons. I recommend that you buy a beginner's book that will take to the intermediate stage. That's what I plan to do.

Having a teacher is best. But you can try goggling free guitar lessons. I started learning guitar online. Websites also gives you info about how to read scores, tabs and stuff. The five-lined scores doesn't really do much if you want to play and sing-along. Learning chords and strumming patterns would be more useful.
