Of course - the meaning of God has changed down through the centuries, according to the knowledge and awareness of the times...
Originally God was based upon the life and times of a certain 'ET' who appeared to be a 'God' to the people of those times - his office was taken over by another ET, hence the change in name for God - because it was not the same ET any longer.
There was no God present, as such in the times of Jesus - for the original story about 'Jesus' see 'The Talmud Jmmanuel' text...

"God" - is the being that, either consiously or unconsiously, is the one that is being seek by all man. He is the sublime, the ultimate, the being that is above all weakness, the All-Mighty, which is perfect in everyway, the one that answer all the question posted by the heart of Man.
For example, we will, in one time or another, afflicted in a situation that we can never get out of, a troubled situation, a matter of life and death struggle, desperate for help that is not forthcoming, call upon the one being that we all know unconsiously is above all thing, with the might and power to deliver us from it all. Like it or not, there will come a time that we will realise that despite all the talent, all the power that we gain over men, we are still powerless when it comes to face down the force of nature.
For those who are learned in the ways of the Faithful, they will know whom to call upon, He is God.
For those who are not, they will also call upon Him, but with varying names, but still the same being with the same attribute. The Most Powerful, The Omnipotent, The Omniscience, The All-Mighty, The All-Seeing, The All-Listening, The Ever Watching Being that have Power over all things. The Absolute.
It doesn't matter who we are, be we muslims or chatolics or christians or jews or whoever, even if we don't even believe in Him, when we call upon Him, He will definitely listen.
No matter how elaborate I try describe His attribute, it is not enough in describing and telling you the meaning of God.
So, I will let The Holy Quran itself, A Dictation from God Himself to answer your question. Seek deep within your self, you will know that it is the truth. Your question has been asked by people of the old, so many times already, thus God answer it in a very personal way.

To explain our existence and make us feel better about dying. He was the old explanation for things our ancestors could not understand. Unfortunately, now that we have real explanations, they are denied so some people can continue believing in the old explanation. He was also used to gain support from poor ignorant people for things like attacking enemies and stuff and to make people behave by threatening them with hell.

I think people have spent many many lives for the answer to that question. Mind you the answer can be satisfactorily given when we see God ourselves.
