A subwoofer creates the low-frequency sounds. These are the sounds that you can "feel" in your chest and can shake your whole room.

A subwoofer makes you feel the explosions in "Pearl Harbor", and shakes your whole room when the T-rex roars in "Jurassic Park".

Without a subwoofer, your surround sound system is not complete. A 10" or 12" is usually big enough for any room.

Get a good one the first time; I found out why the hard way...

Remember your dads speakers that had a big Woofer? This driver created low-frequency sounds for music.

Bass is a bit strange - you actually get a lot of the sound from wall reflections, not directly from the speaker.

In a home theater setup, the location in the room for the L/R speaker is not usually the best for a woofer. So separated subwoofer is used.

The subwoofer is also usually self-powered which frees up power so the receiver has more wattage for the 5 speakers.
