Called a "kick plate". It keeps the bottom of the door from being dinged and dented when carts and stuff are pushed through.

It is a kickplate so that they don't get marks from the bottoms of shoes kicking the doors open. Also prevents scratches on the paint if/when the push equipment through the door and use the equipment to open the door (like a gurney)

The plate allows hospital personnel to push a gurney against the door to open it without damaging the door.

I think it is to keep the bottom of the door from chipping. If patients are being constantly wheeled in, or if other things like carts and such are being wheeled in, that's a lot of dings against the door. The metal is reinforcement- keeps the door from falling apart.

It's a kickplate. Sometimes you will even see them on residential doors. In the hospital, it will help protect the door from damage from kicking the door open ahead of you and I think that a lot of guerneys hit there first also.

it's called a kick plate. it's especially good for when someone in a wheel chair is going thru the door, the front of the chair will hit the plate and not ruin the botton of the wood door.

It's not for heat. It is for protection against things like gurneys being pushed into it and also allows it to be pushed open with a foot without damaging it.
