There are a few reasons to learn commands in German. First, if the dog is a professionally trained Alsatian (the real name for the dog we Americans call "German Shepherd"), they probably already know their commands in German. It is then up to you, the owner, to learn how to effectively communicate with your dog. (Which is true in any case -- "dog training" is more about owner training than dog training.) Secondly, it's to your advantage for your dog to understand commands that someone off the street wouldn't necessarily know. Third, tradition -- Alsatians have been taught in German for many years. Sure, they can be taught commands in any language, but couldn't you look away from your sitcoms for a few minutes and try learning something new?

Only if you didn't want someone to know the commands you are giving your dog. A lot of dogs are now taught/trained in many different languages so that the "common" person won't know the commands that are being given to the dogs. A lot of Law Enforcement dogs are taught commands that are NOT in English so the dog doesn't get "confused" when it's Handler gives a command during an "encounter" while out on patrol with a lot of people around. Personally my own dogs are NOT given commands in English, they were trained with another language. Also to let you know,my dogs are not German Shepherds,so it doesn't matter the breed of the dog, only how they are trained.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/JKTdN
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Why would you want to do that? First off you need to learn how to properly train the dog in your own language. If you want to utilize German or whatever launguage commands, you must know them and be consistent with them or you will just confuse the dog. I use some German words for commands but dogs just learn whatever you want to use as commands -- you can teach the dog that 'rose' means 'sit' if you want but whatever words you use for commands, you need to be consistant. Sitz is sit - not a whole lot of difference and likely you will just end up saying sit anyway since it is YOUR language -- or if you have another first language, use that but whatever you use, know that it will need to be the first word that comes to mind when you are in a stressful situation, which is when you will most need the command. Platz is down, Here is come, Such is search, Fuss is heel, Giblaut is bark - but then you will need to know how to pronounce them and likely you won't and in a pinch will say your primary language word for these things. Actually learn to train a dog first and don't worry about being 'cute' about what commands you want to use. The dog doesnt' know German and it is sort of silly to want to train it in a language you don't even know... a dog's first language is body language -- learn to do that correctly and consistently and you will accomplish more than pretenses of being German...

Just because he is a German Shepard doesn't mean he only knows German.
It's a dog. They begin to relate a certain word to the action you want them to do. You can teach them commands in any language if you really want.
