I went on a retreat where a dozen guys were bunked in a cabin. I couldn't sleep, so I took a walk. When I returned, all of them were breathing deep--inhaling and exhaling in perfect unison!

Have you witnessed this? Can you point me to research or mention of this?

I heard this is a male bonding/survival instinct. Warriors would unconsciously synch as they slept, so that animals would think it was one huge beast, and would not bother them. I also heard that women don't synch like this.

Nice, Kojak. It doesn't happen, but it happened with you and snore-apalooza?

I'm afraid I can't list a source, but it has long been thought (and I'm sure determined) that when people spend time together they subconsciously mimic each others autonomous actions. For example, my nephew walks just like his father because they always walk together.
Also, with most couples, when you spend a sufficient amount of time together your breathing patterns tend to come together into a very close similarity (sometimes, unison). The fact that these people were sleeping would make the merging of their breathing patterns quite likely. Hope that answers your question for you.

First.....having lived in troop barracks for years......not sure your observation is accurate......

Lets agree .....breathing in or breathing out can produce noise.....and at any particular moment you are doing one or the other..... when you returned you felt everyone was breathing in unison......but how do you know when one person was breathing in.....the next person was not breathing out..... this combined noise would drowned out those few not in sync......making it "seem" like everyone was breathing in unison
Finally.....I slept next to a man who made so much noise snoring I thought he was faking it.....he was so loud a man came down from upstairs and asked him to roll over and shut his mouth......BUT I always slept well .....HOW?..... I would get in sync with his breathing...... my breathing noise as his breathing noise.....and I soon fell asleep....????

My sync....." happened" not out of anything "natural'......I did it on purpose that makes it different......besides.... I stated I "thought" you might be wrong.....did not say you were wrong.....it is an opinion

I know it happens. I do it when I'm out in the field [about six guys -- hunting].

maybe it just prevents us from hearing each others snores and waking up??

This is nuts this never happens. If you witnessed this it was just a coincidence. Most people do not breath at the same rate anyway.
