YES YES YES...if you file electronically your return will be rejected because the system matches your name and social security number!!! If your card reads Jane Smith and you are Jane Jones now your SS # will not know your new name two things you can do 1) Change it at the SS office. 2) go ahead and file Married filing Jointly but use your maiden name it's no problem to do that just as long as your name and SS number match. I sadly had to inform many newlyweds that had not changed the name on their SS cards. We did refile with the newlyweds maiden name and it goes through so it's up to you.

The IRS could care less what your name is as long as it matched the name that appears on the Social Security Records at the time your return is matched with SS. For those using e-file that is within hours. For paper filers that is a couple of weeks down the road. A big problem will occur if you change your name with SS just before you file you return. If you wish to change your name do it now (this month) or wait until you have received your refund for the coming season.

If you have not informed Social Security about a name change you are still who you were and can stay who you were for as long as you like.

You can be a liberated woman and file a joint return as John Smith and Mary Jones.

It will not matter as long as your name matches your social security record. If you want to use your married name, you must change it with Social Security.

If you efile, be sure to use the same name on your return as social security has for you , or it will reject. You can use your maiden name and still file on a joint return.

No, if you're legally married it doesn't matter what your name is.
