just a few ideas, most of mine are of things to go to the sand box, but these should work for either! Send him a thanks from me and my family as well!

If he's in basic training, you may not be allowed to send him anything, without him being punished. Check with his mom, or write him a letter and see if you're allowed to send anything, and if so, what you're allowed to send.
If he's not in basic training, your best bet is still to either talk to his folks and see what he needs, or write to him or call him yourself, and see what strikes you as a good gift.
The fact that he's in the military doesn't mean his likes/dislikes have changed, and once he's out of basic training, he'll have access to everything civilians have access to.

The post office has a bulk mailer for 8.95.
Send a wide assortment of hard candy, swiss miss hoyt chocolate, red twizzlers, juicy fruit chewing gum, bazookz bubble gum, anything that won't melt.
send him a disposable camera and tell him to send it back and you'll develope it.
Send him a "MERRY CHRISTMAS" card, not happy holiday!!
Tell him I said....Thanks!!
