It's perfectly safe as long as you keep it properly watered, don't buy it too soon, and make sure your lighted connections are on safe loads. A real tree has a short indoor life. We stopped buying real trees 8 yrs. ago more because of the mess. Even setting it up just 2 wks before Christmas and taking care of it, it still was so brittle when taking it down. The artificial prelights have made our life so much easier and less painful. Also less costly. We save about $150 a year with our artificial.

You need to make sure that the pan under the tree has adequate water to keep it hydrated or it will dry out and catch fire easily. (Check the water every other day and add what is needed). Another thing that goes for resh or plastic trees is to never leave the lights plugged in while you are sleeping or out as you will not be able to put the fire out quickly before everything burns down. A fire doubles in size every minute.

some good info here. Fresh trees, not dry. Good lights, not old. Mini lights, not old hot bulbs. No candles!! on or near tree. No fireplace near tree. Limit time lights are on. Discard tree when needles get brittle. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in a nearby closet and KNOW HOW TO USE IT.
Only person I know who had a tree catch fire picked it up and ran the burning tree outside. He got some nasty burns but the house did not catch first......the tree was next to an outside door.

I have had a real Christmas tree every year, and we have never had problems. Just get a tree stand with a water reservoir (make sure it's always full) and only turn on the lights when in the room. They are kind of a pain, but they smell so good and they look beautiful!

Yes, it is safe. Just make sure that the christmas lights does not have exposed wires. Also use lights using bulbs with small wattage.
