Good point. Makes his job rather easy, doesn't it? I've always helped myself and others when I could. I would never depend on a fictional God who can't be bothered, to step in and take over.

A survey was done and over (no I cannot furnish the reference, I heard it in a sermon.) 1/2 of the people, including Christians were asked, "What bible verse can you remember ?" And yes it was,
"God helps those who help themselves"
You will not find that anywhere in the bible. No where. It is not a bible verse. It is just a popular quote made up by man.
However, God does help you in life.
Smiles and Blessings to all.

Non-profit religions can be such a volatile topic for many that what Ben Franklin said was a way to introduce what he believed was a little truth to the topic it seems to me.

Yes, those born in the ghetto, no matter how hard they try, often have a hard time getting out of the slums. Sure, there are rare exceptions, but they are indeed rare. The same can be said for those born in many developing and third world countries. Those who work hardest and truly deserve peace and prosperity rarely get ahead, instead, those who are ahead are usually those who don't deserve, the crooked, the cheaters, bullies.

There's an irony in the statement which does seem to have lot of self-fulfilling prophecy it, but from a religious standpoint I find it to be brilliant. It has people solve their own problems all the while diverting credit to someone else.

God helped us by giving us free will. Most people have a center of good and evil. If you keep on the right path you will have less problems. He is the light at the end of the tunnel.Following what he has taught us keeps us in his sight . He has intervened so many times on my behalf. I may fall but I know I have to pull myself up with his encouragement the whole way.He wants to know we are worthy of his love and we want to show him we are.

Actually, that statement is in the Havamal (a collection of pre-xian Norse wisdom) but there, it's plural----the godS help those who help themselves.
Its persistence within our culture through 1,000 years of xian indoctrination is, for me, one of the surest indicators of its truth . . . and the vigor of the Elder folkways and worldview. Even though it is directly counter to virtually everything in the Buybull, which paints us as helpless, worthless, and utterly dependent on the whims of Yahweh, our Northern European "folksoul" continues to know, instinctively, that we must stand on our own, and take up our luck with both hands, before we can expect the ancient godhs of our blood and soil to lend their strength and luck to our own.
No supplicants or mendicants among the children of Freyr. Just *doers.*

that doesn't say if you help yourself therefor you won't need God.
thats just saying, God isn't going to do anything if you aren't going to do anything.
draw close to God and he'll draw close to you.
He is waiting for us to make the move... and yes that is in the bible. and no it isn't stupid, it is profound.
