I think I know what you're getting at, so allow me to relate a personal story:

A few years ago I sailed through a category 2 typhoon in Asia in a 28ft sloop. We are talking 50-60 knot winds and breaking waves 30-40 feet high. This is what mariners called "survival conditions." This went on for three days and there was no way to outrun the storm, which was unusual for that time of year. There was definitely a few hours where I thought me (and my shipmate) would not survive, but I never found "God."

It never once crossed my mind that I should forgo my (nearly) lifelong atheism and pray to God. In fact, we were so busy and exhausted from fighting just to stay alive that such a thing would have been a dangerous distraction.

That was the closest I'll probably ever be to a "foxhole" but here's one atheist who belies the adage.

Despair. i don't know that I've ever had despair. however, when i am particularly upset, i talk to my friends and family. if I waited for help from your god, the mythical Hell would freeze over before anything happened

I've never been in the kind of despair that requires me to interact with a fictional being. When I'm in need of being held, I turn to my husband and family.

God. In fact I called on Him today when caught in a chaotic, crowded, hellacious parking lot full of angry demons. Christmas shopping, sigh.
