Starts at home and in my opinion it ends at home, but I don't know whose home.

Charity should begin in the heart not the home. Many people of faith have a duty to give (not just Christians btw). Charities are scrutinsed financially and have to produce accounts and annual redports, so you can work out how much they have spent on charitable work and how much on admin for instance.

some charities r better than others, things like oxfam are bad; 60% of donations goes into admin costs of the business, which is staggering. Charities like wateraid are apparently a lot better in this respect and which is my chosen charity which does a lot of good fundamental work bringing water and HOPE to the poorest people on earth giving them a chance.

Charity in the Bible can be translated Love. When we have Love for our fellow human beings we give. There are plenty of good charitable organizations, you can start with St. Jude Childrens Hospital. You can check them all out at charitynavigator.org. They rate charitable organizations. I have been volunteering and giving for over 20 years, there is nothing better in my book. When you give to someone who cannot give back you then you are giving, very few will do it, but with out a doubt it is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Its additive, and Love is a good thing. The best thing. The Bible says God is Love, when we give, we know why. Its spiritual, it touches inside, where it counts.

charity usually has more to do with the donor wanting to redress the balance in their own lives, so they can feel good about themselves, so they can make up for those....ahem.. indiscretions they are responsible for, how often do we hear, im a good person, i give to charity!, i give to the people i love and if i had more to spare i would give to extended family, i do give to 1 charity and i hand it direct so no agent gets a percentage.

Most of the money given goes into bureaucracy, sadly that's the truth. Besides, since the scandal involving the CEO of United Way when it was discovered that he was having a mistress using United Way's money, I lost my faith in charities.
