People wrote the scriptures because they thought they were important. It described their understanding of humanity's relationship with God. But to tell the stories, they had to include details. Unfortunately, people are usually more interested in the details than the message. When Abraham welcomed the thre strangers under the Terebinth of Mamre, the point wasn't the tree or the location, it was the nature of hospitality. The Bible has good (and bad) examples of how people should live, but they need to be adapted to one's own circumstances.
As for the afterlife, we really can't know about it. Even the most graphic metaphor is describing something we can't sense in our time, space and matter bodies. So it's best to focus on the here and now. Instead of worrying about the quality of your relationship with Jesus, just assume you have one and act accordingly. Just imagine Jesus and you are going around together, or even imagine you are standing in for him. How does that affect your behavior toward others? Keep that up and you will have no worries about hell.

The Bible is compromised of the old testament Jewish history, myths and legends, poetry and prose. The new testament written history by 3 Apostles(Matthew, Mark and John) what they saw when Jesus walked upon this earth and Luke, Peter and Paul throught their saved letters in the early days of Christianity during the beginning of the Church.
Your faith might be on a downward slope right now and I can say that is almost normal nowadays. The problem with many Catholics is they say they are 'a Catholic'; but they don't know anymore about the Church than they learned in 2nd grade.
You need to study and learn as an adult.
Read the Acts of the Apostles.. go to www.newadvent.com and read up on different topics. Learn! Pray for an increase of faith; it brings joy to your heart and has more substance than anything the world can offer you.

before all the Christians answer (I may be too late for that), the Bible is what you make of it. If you believe it should hold apiece in your heart, then let it. If you feel the Bible has no place in your life then so be it. you don't have to be part of a religion to believe in God (or whatever/whoever you believe in now).
As for hell, don't worry about that too much. Hell is a Christian thing that's been over exaggerated. You'll go back to your faith whenever you're ready (i've seen it happen many times before).
And if you don't, then that's okay too. God is always there for you, no matter what. That's the kind of person He is.
Hope I helped.
P.S. If you get kicked in the butt because of this question, then try not to get your hopes down. I get it to.

You've accepted a modern worldview and realize that people write books, not deities. That's a good thing, not a bad thing. There are many Christian communities that agree with this viewpoint and would welcome you in. There's a running joke at our church that it is a "Catholic Recovery center". (Hi, my name is __________. I'm a recovering fundamentalist, but I've been rational and logical for three weeks now.)

Get out of the Catholic-cult, forget everything they tried to brainwash into you, then read the BIBLE (King James BIBLE) and learn the truth for yourself.
