A bit drastic, but it certainly does the business.

Mind you, you would be arrested for murder if you tried that one these days...Do you think God has got more civilized since then?

Not to labor the point, but if the Bible got that one wrong, then the Bible is not inerrant. So the fundies are wrong.

And if it got it right, it would clearly be wrong to obey such a God (unless you wanna get arrested). So the fundies are wrong on that as well.

As a Jew, we comment on this one every year. First of all, it was never carried out. It is merely there as a lesson to the child of what can be done.

After the Golden Calf, we were given some commands that should not be followed. This is a totally alien concept to non-Jews.

This is in Ez 20:25.

All punishments in the Torah were maximum punishments and could only be meted out in very specific circumstances. The only possible witnesses against this son are the father and mother, and it is prohibited for family to testify against family. So it could never be carried out.

There are a couple of other commands like this that are well know. One is the "sotah" where a wife is accused of being alone with a man in a situation where she could have committed adultery but didn't.

You forgot the last part of the verse....21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

God was protecting the people from disobedient and rebellious behavior. I wonder how many kids today would act up if that law were in force. Fear is a good thing to keep a person from doing wrong. The idea is, if a person is stubborningly not willing to change their ways after having been chastised, then they will suffer a penalty for that... which is in keeping with God's righteous punishment for all of us. Willful disobedience, disrespect and rebellion is not good or proper for a child to their parents and is not tolerated by God.
What good is to come of allowing disobedience and rebellious behavior if God will judge it in the end? Better to stop it right away.

I knew that was in the Bible. The Old Testament is really harsh. I don't how Jewish people could worship a God like that.
