Today, the tongues are demonic. Same as the noises that the medium in the temple chants, same spirit(s)
When the blessed Holy Spirit empowers in Acts 2, they were all speaking in tongues ie in local dialektos. Check out the Greek!
1 Cor 14, tells us that tongues is for unbelievers. When tongues were spoken, it was orderly, one by one to the max 3 persons. Women NEVER, NEVER, EVER spoke in tongue in the churches - if you understand 1 Cor 14 properly.
Today, the tongue is utter confusion, so even women can speak with demonic languages!

I think everyone does, at least those who can speak do. You know, English, French, German, etc. or whatever their native tongue is. Most of the time I know what Im saying but once in awhile I'll say something that just don't come out right, like my tongue gets twisted some way. But that usually happens if I talk too fast.

1) who can speak tongues?"
the Bible says,
that those who believe will speak in tongues. [mark 16:17]
that its a dispensational sign and promise from the Father [acts 1:4],
from the day of Pentecost in the first century that is supposed to continue until Jesus returns again. [acts 2:39]
.
many church people have misused certain scriptures to speak against tongues... but the Bible never does.
there is no scripture to warn against tongues or anything in scripture that says that tongues are not of God but of the devil.
Jesus assures that tongues are from God and not the devil... read luke 11:9-13
vs. 13, "if you know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"
Jesus said, "those who believe shall cast out demons and speak with new tongues".
so its clear that those who speak in tongues do not do so by the devil.
.
in the church, all who speak in tongues may speak, men and women, as long as it is in orderly fashion.. and during times of worship and prayer.
1 corinth.14:15, 26; romans 8:26-27; eph.5:18-20; col.3:16-17; jude 20-21
1 corinth. 14:34 does not allow that any person may tell a man's wife that she cannot speak. but only that wife's husband.
and only if she talks out of turn during a church service.
also, the verse is not specifically addressing speaking in tongues.
but everyone is equally at liberty in all freedoms regarding tongues [1 corinth.14:39-40],
and subject to all restrictions that Paul states regarding tongues
.
2) "what are you saying do you even know"
the Bible says that those who speak in tongues speak unto God, in the spirit uttering divine secrets. [1 corinth.14:2]
and, that its according to God's will. [romans 8:27]
and, if any who speak in tongues want to know what they said, that they can pray to interpret. [1 corinth.14:12-14]
.
what are tongues for?
for believers to be edified and built up spiritually. to mature in love. to minister the gifts of the Spirit in love to others.
tongues can be used to speak to people of other languages, that they hear the gospel, but its not often heard of. so its possible to be the exception, not the rule. most ministries take language translators to foreign countries.

Anyone can receive the HG. Its part of salvation, see Acts 2:38-9. Its to give you power over sin and to be a powerful witness for Christ. All one has to do is repent of their sins, pray for the HG, be baptized in Jesus' name(specifically) to be saved. Anyone w/ the HG will speak w/ tongues. Getting the HG is between you and God. There are instances(many) in real life and in Bible times where they were understood to be praising God,prophesying in the people's own language. But the Bible says in I Cor.13 sometimes its the tongues of men OR of angels. On earth angels spoke to people in their native tongue, but clearly there's a difference. Why else state it that way? So, in short no people including yourself may not be able to interpret what you are saying when you receive the HG. But its a time of joy, peace, and salvation! The gift of tongues is where a person speaks in tongues in the congregation and somebody interprets for all to understand. God gives gifts to everyone severally as he wills. We must pray and seek God in both matters. God has promised to do both if we but ask. If you have more questions, I'd be happy to help. You can also go to upci.org God Bless!!!!

This happened to me twice. I woke up in the middle of the night with my hands raised toward the ceiling and I was using a language that I had never heard before. Then its like the noise from my speaking woke me up. I dont know what I was saying but the words were flowing out of my mouth as though I new the language that I was using.

Yes i speak in different tongues as the Spirit enables. 1Cor 14v1 -- eagerly desire the spiritual gifts - verse2 "For he who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men but to God b/c in the Holy Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things. Verse4: he who speaks in a strange tongue edifies and improves himself --
Some gifts are to build ourselves up and some are to build up the body of Christ.
I was sitting in my living room praying a few yrs ago - and a word came out in a tongue (unknown to me) - seconds later The Holy Spirit gave me in interpretation - which was -- *Let This Be A House Of Prayer* it was a wonderful moment - visited by God and given such a beautiful word which He allows me to this day to fulfil...
Yeshua Hameshia
EDIT: Can i just say to the poster above me - Theophilous - if you read from the beginning of the chapter - you will see it's a heavenly language - you have taken v33 out of context - it's worth reading and understanding fully what God has given us -
God bless you.

The point of speaking in tongues is to preach the Gospel to those that do not speak your language. You are given the power to speak any language by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Tongues just means different languages..
Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
"every man heard them speak in his own language."
No confusion there.
Everyone heard in their own language.
Now if you heard somebody " gobbling like a turkey." Its of Satan.
1Cr 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

The modern day church groups that invented this practice should really invest in sending one of their members to a class in the Greek language, maybe then they would understand the book of Acts better. The terminology used in the text does not have anything to do with performing a very bad "Jazz scat routine" without music.

God blessed me with this, in order to help me pray better. Interpretation of tongues is a separate gift....but sometimes I have an idea of what I am saying.
i can recognize certain words and their meanings as I pray...but maybe not the entire context.
