Actually that is a good question since it could equally apply to both situations, but usually it refers to baggage.

At the supermarket, they normally have plastic bags and paper bags to bring your groceries home. People have their preferences, so they choose one or the other. There you have it and remember there are not stupid questions....

I use a Glock 9mm, I really don't care if they put the money in paper, plastic or a tote bag as long as they leave out the dye sticks.

WOW!!! That is so NOT a stupid question.

They are referring to the bag you prefer. BUT, I bet most people never even thought about the fact that it could EASILY be referring to payment method!!

Interesting!

Goodness, how old are you? You have a choice over having your groceries in a paper bag or a plastic bag. They could care less how you pay as long as you pay.

They are asking what type of bags you want. Usually it doesnt really matter how you are paying (paper or plastic), so there would be no need to ask beforehand.

If the actual phrase is "paper or plastic" it's about the bags. The phrase that asks about money is "cash or charge". (I can't remember the last time they asked about money, though...)

They are talking about bags. Some stores have paper bags and they have plastic bags.

When the question come from the BAGGER, it refers to the bag. If it comes from the CHECKER... IT REFERS TO THE BAG!!!

If you have been "always wondering" about this, then you have TOO MUCH TIME on your hands, m'dear! Take up knitting!

Have a polite day.

Usually bags, but sometimes a clever cashier will try to switch it around. Just pay attention to the context. :)
