Yes, they do.
Edit:
Just as a baby or young child who passes away, a mentally ill person who hasn't the capacity to make a rational decision will go to Heaven. Just as those who have never had the opportunity to hear God's word. They are not held to the same standards as those of us who've heard and either accepted or refused salvation.

It all depends on the age and their comphrehension before they became mentally ill. The age of accountability is 14 or so I have read., I got saved at the age of 14, praise God. Its kind of like suicide. People that commit suicide miss Heaven (Revelations-a minister showed me the verse, wish I could remember it ). Alot of people go to Hell, and those people experience different kinds of Hell. Muslims who lived in a Muslim country all their lives do not experience a fire as intense as an Oklahoma farmer would, because that farmer probably was exposed to the gospel and did not accept Jesus when he could have. If the mentally ill person had a time in their lives when they were not mentally ill, that was their chance......if they became catatonic and they are still not saved, its sad I know, but they will probably go to hell.

Yes - I believe since God made all of us he understands mentally ill people.
I think if you do everything you can TO THE BEST of your physical and mental ability to be a good person, you will go to heaven. It is not the fault of these people that they cannot consciously accept Jesus into their hearts.
By the way, my mother works with the mentally ill, and many people I know with mental illness have some of the kindest souls that I have ever encountered! God sees the good in everyone.

The atonement was given to help us overcome sin. If you can not sin which is to say choose evil over good. If you don't have that capability then do you have a need to be forgiven? However they are still fallen from grace in that they are mortal, therefore the Resurrection is the part of the atonement provided for them to return to God. Addendum: I see some incongruity in some of the responses. I have always heard from the "Mainstream Christians" that if you don't vocally accept Jesus as your savior then you are damned to hell and that those who don't have the chance to hear about Jesus in this life are just out of luck, they will not be with God after this life. Now we are seeing some form of mercy being applied to those who can not make the choice. To me what is the difference? Lack of understanding or lack of ability to hear both lead to the lack of ability to make the choice. Where is your consistency? I think also to say where is your understanding. God is not merciless, just the opposite and not just to you or me but to everyone. Those people who could never hear the message of the Savior will have that opportunity, to hear and accept. To look into it study where Jesus went after his death and before his ressurection. Where was he for those 3 days? I will give you a hint.. it wasn't sunbathing on the Med.

Yes, I believe so. The Bible states that the mentally challenged(those not able to understand) go to Heaven. I think a mental disease can block one's understanding. But only God can truly judge. Just pray all those in that situation.

There is no requirement to accept Jesus into your life. Although there are people who believe in the heresy of believers baptism it cannot be supported by Scripture that says that the requirement is instead that we be Baptized and receive the Holy Spirit to be born again. Infants and mentally deficient people can receive salvation and be born again through baptism.

Do you think that just because a mentally ill person isn't as mentally capable or rational as you, that makes him or her a bad person? The fact that you're "normal" doesn't make you any better in god's eyes.

They still sin. Some are incapable of sinning because they are vegetables. I believe some are are going to be covered by the blood of Christ and others won't be. It's all about repentance. I do firmly believe that we're only held accountable according to the knowledge that we do have. I do know that when Judgment comes we'll have the bodes that we'll have for eternity and we'll each clearly understand our judgment, no matter how we were physically in life.

God cares more about what's in a person's heart than anything else. Mentally ill people can and do recover. God looks at a person's potential, something which might surprise you or anyone who just sees the label "mentally ill".

For Christians, the inability to comprehend a rational thought is obviously not required for entrance into heaven.
