If a teacher sent home a note with a child to be signed by their parent and the child was from a polygamist family where his father had several wives, who should the signer of the note be? Would it be appropriate for the child to go to one of the other wives (not his biological mother) and have her sign the note or is it required that one of his biological parents signs the note? Do polygamist families have certain guidelines in place for such instances? How should a teacher respond if the note was signed by one of the other wives?

By the way, I'm a teacher. I've been thinking about this hypothetical situation and how I should treat it. I guess my question would also pertain to children with step-families. Is it appropriate for me to accept a not that's been signed by their step-parent if I know that one or both of their biological parents are alive and home or should I emphasize (gently) to the parent that their biological parent sign?

The note must be signed by a parent or guadian and in that case then each wife would be considered a guardian. Any of the signatures would be accepted.

Since polygamy is illegal I would think it would be in their own best interest to not have another wife sign it! There is hierarchy in polygamist society and the first wife is of highest rank. They operate seperate families within the big family so I would think it inappropriate for the other wife to sign. Some polygamists don't even share a house together, each wife has their own house and the husband spends like every two nights with a different wife. Watch Big Love- haha.

If you are dealing with a government (public) school, then only the father and "a" mother can show themselves responsible for a child. I doubt if many children of polygamist families actually go to school, though. They might get smart enough to understand that either they will, if male, be tossed out of the compound when they start looking at girls, or, if female, will be married to one of their old male relatives as soon as they begin menstruating. What screwed up pieces of crap these pedophilic polygamists are!

Any guardian of the child could sign it. If the other wives are all guardians of all the children, any could sign forms.
