It occurred to me, that people don't want a bunch of laws shoved down their throat, or to be told what to do.
I was thinking, what if we made it easy. ALL dogs must be microchipped. It's a law as serious as A Rabies shot, It's MANDATORY. Then we can see who is breeding all these dogs that end up in the shelter. We can return dogs to those breeding them, and clean up the shelters. Everyone gets their dog back, whether you want it back or not. The dog is your responsibility, you will get your dog back and you will have to deal with your responsibility properly.
A/C can check to make sure that the dogs are returned and dealt with properly. We will know what they do with them (dump them, shelter etc) as we will have the chips in the dogs to know where they came from.

Will it work to make it Mandatory to microchip ALL dogs ??

I don't think ANYONE wants there dog to end up here?

In theory I think it's a great idea, but then you have to factor in what may be done with the dogs once they are returned. Some people will step up to the plate and properly deal with their dogs, but how many others will be neglected, shot, left to fend for themselves in a back yard, etc.?
I think the chip is a good idea though because anyone found contributing more than a certain amount of dogs to the shelter system could lose their right to own and breed anymore dogs at all.

A great idea, but what happens when the dogs are returned to the owners?

BUT, if all dogs were microchipped and it was found that a number of dogs were coming from one place and that one place could then be regularly inspected to ensure that there weren't any other dogs being bred, that would be ideal.

I'm with Shanna on this one.

It is a nice thought... but I don't think it would really solve anything. In fact, I think it would cause more animals to be abused or killed in inhumane ways. Those who breed these poor animals that end up in shelters, don't give a rats *** where the animals end up, or in what type of home. If they did, they'd be responsible in their breeding to begin with (which includes taking back animals if, for some reason, they have to be re-homed), or not breed.

Great idea - and to the first poster - fine - how about you get your dog(s) tatooed instead. All dogs are therefore tied to an owner - if it ends up in a shelter or on the street it isn't euthanized, it's returned! It's a great idea!!

My major concern would be with BYB who would regulate if their dog had a litter. There just isn't enough "law enforcement" to monitor this. Look at what happens on Animal Planet when a BYB is discovered, it takes a long time.

It is a good idea in theory, however getting people to abide is separate. And do you really want to force these people who care nothing about the treatment of animals to have them back? I don't.

How many people license their dogs? How many spay and neuter, keep up to date on shots, etc...?

You have awesome intentions, people stink.

well, although it's a nice thought, i'm not quite sure what i would do because i, personally, do not want a foreign substance sitting in my dog. although there are no reported cases of microchips causing injuries or health problems in dogs, there are questions regarding microchips. i'm afraid that i would be one person that would dodging the law on this one.
