you could book an appointment, that way you can make sure there is someone available that can help you. or you can just walk in. winter time, they arn't too busy. they are going to come running as soon as you walk in the door. not really trying to be pushy, but because they know (for the most part) you have no idea what you are looking for.

try on a few dresses you like. even have them measure you and get a copy of the measurements. that way if you deside to order online, you have them. i ordered mine at DHgate.com. direct from china and real cheap. tailored for me in less than 30 days to my door.

The shops by my house don't require an appointment but I highly suggest making one. An appointment will guarantee you a fitting room as well as a saleswoman who can help you gather styles and zip you up. Usually they will ask you a few questions about your wedding like when it is, where, what style you were looking for, etc. I went to 7 different shops and tried on like 100 gowns and not once did I feel pressured. They will have you fill out a card with some information on it and they will mark down the gowns you liked so the next time you come in you can reference those gowns. Have fun, I wish I was still in the "trying on phase" but I already purchased!

I would go online first and see what styles you like. Try alfredangelo.com, bridecouture.com, netbride.com, moncheribridals.com. Then when you are sure of the style you like, go into a local wedding gown shop and straight off tell the sales person that you are just looking, and it is your first time out. If you do find something you like, tell the salesperson you want to think about it a few days. As far as it being too early...sorry to inform you it isn't. You need at least six months to order most dresses, so get started in December. Good Luck

Always make an appointment! You want to guarentee there will be someone there to wait on you personally.

Avoid goin on saturday or after 5pm. its always crowded and you might have to share a mirror with a few other brides. and someone else might be trying on the dress you want to try on. Mid-week, mid-day... the place is a ghost town, you can have the whole showroom to yourself.

Keep in mind that even though you're wedding is in the summer... it takes up to 4 months for your dress to come in. You're gonna want at least 6weeks for alterations. So if you're getting married THIS summer... you're gonna wanna order your dress sooner rather than later.

It helps the consultant a lot if you come in with pictures from wedding magazines of details you like. Type of skirt, lace, beading, etc. etc. It will help them narrow down what they have to fit what you want more personally.

David's bridal is very inexpensive, but i personally do not like their customer service practices, they enjoy making you wait for a long time.. and the sales people have attitude problems.

Most bridal shops WILL NOT let you take pictures of the dress until you've made a down payment. Do not get upset at this, its a copyright thing. You can take the picture to a seemstress and have it copied, and thats bad.

yes, you should book an appointment.
I have found there to be no pressure to buy. However,I did have one salesperson note that because I was looking far in advance that if I 'fell in love' with a particular dress I might need to purchase it sooner than I planned in case that dress is no longer carried when I am ready to buy. She was not pressuring, I felt that she was giving me information. My wedding is not until 2009.
I really liked going to Davids Bridal as they allowed me to take pictures while wearing the dresses so I could look back and see what I looked like.
A tip - buy yourself a good strapless bra to wear when trying on the dresses. It will help ensure that you get the best possible handle on how the dress will fit you.

Are you concerned because you think that the sales lady may think you are not really engaged? As in Muriel's Wedding? Dont worry about it! Go and have a blast, not having your ring wont matter at all. Just remember that if you choose a dress with gold or silver embroidery, you will want to get the embroidery that matches your ring. Like if you have a platinum ring you would want to get the silver embroidery and not the gold, that would be the only instance where your ring would come into play. Best of luck!

book an appointment and if you will be looking at bridesmaid styles too let them know when you book how many ladies might be trying things on...

decide ahead of time how much you are willing to spend and ask them when making the appointment what price range their gowns are.. that way you know going into it if this is a shop where you are just getting ideas or if you might want to buy that day..

it is not too soon to be getting your dress for a Summer wedding.. if it has to be made for you or special ordered it could take up to 3-4 months for it to come in and then you might need alterations... and Spring is a busy time for shoppes so if you wait to order things may be backordered and you won't be able to get what you want..

oh and wear or bring a strapless bra and a simple pair of heels

You need to make an appointment soon. I'm getting married in June and have already ordered my dress. It takes about 6 months to get the dress in (if ordered). They also need a month or so for alterations. If you go to David's Bridal, you can just get a dress off the rack and can hold off getting a dress until closer to your wedding date. Good luck with everything!
