All stores seem to only have HD programming dispayed on their TVs. When asked for how normal cable (digital) will look like, they are clueless. Opionion differ from one sales rep to the other. Which store displays normal cable signal on HD TVs?

In my search for a set, I found none that do, and none who would hook it up for me special. That's because if you take a picture that looks good on a 27"et and put it up on a 50" set, it's not going to look as good, no matter what you do. that's the whole point of HD, to have more resolution so that you can use larger sets. In addition, the TV processors have to deinterlace the 480i picture and upscale it to the 720P or 1080P of your set. Some processors are good, some aren't. Finally, the analog signal you're using is often degraded by the time it gets to your TV. The large set and the processor tend to make these imperfections worse than on a smaller analog set. My experience is that, on the same set, some analog looks pretty good, and some looks awful. The quality of what is being "broadcast" varies all over the place. So-my recommendation is that you look for professional reviews of any sets you're interested in. By the way, I've seen reviews where the HD was highly rated, but the set was rejected because of poor SD. You can get the December Consumer Reports-they rate a large number of sets, including their SD performance.

I don't think you are going to see any difference with regular standard definition cable on either a 720p or 1080p screen.
I would however recommend going with a DLP TV instead of the LCD or Plasma.
Plasma's cost way more per inch than DLP. They also weigh considerably more. Just because they are thin does not make them light.

It will look bad.

There are 3-5 posts each day complaining about how bad standard def looks on these high-res displays.

Fact: Standard Def became the standard in the 1940's.
Fact: Standard Def was designed for a 9 inch, black and white tube.

So when you magnify it 5 times and display it on a high definition display - it's like putting newsprint under a magnifying glass - you see the grain, snow, and problems.

Just accept that it will be big, but not look good.

If the cable is digital and supplied from a box it will look pretty good. It is analog cable that looks bad on a HDTV because what happens is you now have a display that is so sharp is accentuates the flaws in analog cable.
