The 40GB PS3 is the only one that cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games.

The 20GB and 60GB PS3's have the best backward compatibility because of the Emotion Engine chip and can play nearly every PS1 and PS2 game ever made.

The 80 GB PS3 can play both PS1 and PS2 games, but it can't play as many as the 20GB and 60GB PS3's because it uses Emulation Software to be backward compatible

The 80GB can play most PS2 games

and the 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games.

The very first 60 gig and 20 gig yes
The 80 gig they say some do and some dont
The 40 gig doesnt
