I am thinking about joining the navy. Currently im overweight and have bad body image issues. How are people like me treated by other recruits or personnel? Is it group showers? What can I expect?

I want to do this to better myself and this constant fear holds me back. I graduated college already and i want to go into photo journalism. Do you have any say in where you are stationed?

I guess im just really nervous and looking for some people who have been through it.

If you're "too" overweight, they won't take you. However, if you have just a little extra, they will.

You'll be treated like any other entry-level private: crappy. Nobody cares what you look like, especially at basic training.

Yes, it's group showers, and no, nobody will look at you - everyone is too tired to care what's going on around them. In addition, you'll get a total of like 3 minutes in the shower - so everybody's in too much of a rush to wash their sweaty you-know-what's to look around.

PLEASE don't worry about your weight - I can almost guarantee you'll lose it anyway, by the time you're done training.

You'll have say in where you're stationed IF you get your recruiter to guarantee it - MAKE SURE HE/SHE puts it in writing, or you won't get it. Him/her just telling you doesn't count for anything. DON'T SIGN ANYTHING until you see it in print that your first duty station is guaranteed.

Good luck! Don't worry about your weight - no one cares in the military. As long as it doesn't hold you back from giving things your best effort, it doesn't matter!

Nobody is going to care what you look like while you are in boot. I can't remember what anyone I was in boot with looked like in the shower. Everyone is going to be to concerned with hurrying up and finishing before they get smoked.

If I were you, I would try to get guaranteed "A" School for Photo Journalist. Make sure you get it in writing on your contract. Otherwise you may not get what you want.

we used to have group showers but not sure anymore. if your overweight alot they may not take you but if its just a little they will. you should get treated any differently than on the outside by people. people are mean and cruel though. if you are lazy and don't do your share, it may bring hard times on you but boot camp has changed alot. good luck, you will loose weight in boot camp.

group showers? O God...that must be the navy.

A. Lose the weight
B. Possibly get a waiver and lose the weight at boot camp

moot point. you cannot enlist UNTIL you meet Height/weight Standards. in other words, you cannot be overweight and enlist.
