I have about 80 hours of community service to finish up and I no longer have a babysitter for my 4 year-old since I just moved here to Downtown Savannah.

I'm a good person in a bad situation: I took the wrap for my sister so she wouldn't go to jail, now I've got community service to do.

I'm brand new to the area - from NJ - and I want desperately to have this finished in 2 weeks (before my husband comes home from Iraq).

Does anyone know what I can do where I can bring my daughter with me safely? Driving people to the Dr? Working at the library? Phone Numbers? Contact info is a HUGE help!!

THANK YOU!

Have you tried the Savannah Chatham Humane Society?

Also you could try going to the courthouse in downtown Savannah and asking them about the community service opportunities available to you...I'm sure they have a list of thing you could choose from

Do not bring up why you need to do community service with organizations that involve volunteers -- it's very inappropriate. If they need to run a criminal background check on you or ask in their volunteering application whether you have been convicted of a felony or a crime that relates to something in particular (such as harming children, computer-related crime, etc.), *then* you bring it up. It's not that you should hide anything but, rather, you don't want to sound desperate -- you want to sound like someone they would very much feel confidence in involving in their organization.

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://savannah.craigslist.org/) all list volunteering opportunities in Savannah. You will need to look for opportunities that are most appropriate to your skills and availability and that provide childcare. Finding childcare is going to be difficult, as most nonprofits do not provide such, but just keep asking. Also ask if there are childcare providers at local churches (you want who have undergone a criminal background check, ofcourse).

Remember that finding a community service opportunity is a lot like finding a job -- you will need to knock on many doors and undergo many interviews before you find something. Also, you will need to talk to your court contact to see what paperwork the nonprofit you assist will need to provide, and you need to make sure the nonprofit you assist is prepared to complete this paperwork for you.
