Salaam,The Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) through angel Gabriel. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) Pbuh memorized the entire quran with the help of angel Gabriel. After Prophet Muhammad had memorized the Quran he asked the sahaba's to memorize the quran, but as he saw many of the sahabas(The Prophets Companions) passed away with time he ordered the sahabas to write the revelations down. The entire quran was revealed with in a span of 23 yrs i beleive and before prophet Muhammad passed away he had many of sahaba's memorize the quran and had the quran written. The Quran was complete before the Prophet passed away but the chapters were put in order after the prophets life bcz the last of the revelation was revealed only after mecca was conqured which had a message that the Prophet will Go to Allah as his purpose was fullfilled.

The Quran has the most significance in a muslims life as Islam is a way of leading life and we learn about islam through the Quran. The Quran tells us how to behave with our parents , to be always kinds with them, how to treat ur wife, it says one should treat her with love and respect even if one dislikes her and covers allmost all aspects of life.

On the intelectual level too the quran has a lot of value as it has never been proven wrong if u look at things logically for more details refer to Quran and Modern Science-Conflict of Conciliation By Dr.Zakir Naik

And our Beloved Prophet has been Reported to Say "Go even as far as china if u have to aquire knowledge"
So, Quran encourages a muslim to move forward towards new scientific discoveries and stuff.

The role of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was as a messenger. He received the Lords (swt) revelations through the Angel Gabrielle. The significance of the Quran in our religion and in our intellectual life is one of a guidance of how our Lord (swt) wants to be worshiped, a guidance of his warnings for all mankind and a guide for us to live our lives as regards health, marriage, parenting, eating, drinking, education, worship and life its all right there in one book for all.

to give an updated spin on the Quran, harmonizing current information (in science and medicine, etc) with the core values of Islam..

an example would be fasting - before it was from dusk to dawn, but now that we know about the 6 months of night in the north pole, it's been changed..

Since Mohammed is dead, it is only through the written Q'ran that he can continue to guide his followers. Therefore, the Q'ran becomes the closest they can get to the words of a living prophet. Mohammed is the source of the Q'ran. Nothing else in the life of a Muslim can possibly be as signficant as the words of the dead prophet.

Basically it is the same as any other holy book is to it's followers. It becomes truth without verification which is always a dangerous thing.
