First jeep I bot WAS a 89 cherokee 6 cy manuel, put big tires on it raised it, rock rails, on board air, steel bumpers and wench, had the normal maintenance, plus a few I broke off-roading, parts are cheap or very reasonable (stay away from dealer), until I had electrical problem that burnt it now its in jeep heaven. Now its time for a tj 6 cy manuel. Do I like jeeps? Are they reliable? YES great on bad winter roads, Only thing I can suggest is as what others have already told you, if its for off-roading buy a 6 cy.. the difference in gas mileage between the 4 and 6 is really not noticable. And when u want that extra humf you have it in a 6.
Good luck

Have an '89 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with I 6(4.0L). Easy to fix, parts are very reasonable. Used to get app. 18 mpg until put lift kit and larger wheels.
Oh yeah,.... 253,000 miles. No tranny problems, no transfer problems, never had to go inside the motor.
Highly recommend them. The CJ can be cold, the others aren't.

I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee laredo just hit 176000 miles. Still has original exhaust system (Daimler Benz did replace the Cat converter for free as part of a general recall. Replaced plugs and wires at 160K and transmission fluid at 170K (it still was pink and smelled clean but transmission was slipping). Car runs great mechanically and is one of most comfortable long distance driving cars I've ever had.

Older models are great. They will go anywhere, and are 100x better than the HUMMER. Newer models have catered way to much to soccer moms, who want to have a cool looking mini-van. Hense the reason Jeep decided to go to the push-button 4WD systems. Which completely turned me away from Jeep.
Jeeps are great in the snow, offroad, and the Grand-Cherokee's are able to tow 5,000-6,500 pounds when properly equipped.

They are great off-road SUV's and are very cheap to buy.
The bad thing about Jeeps that they all have poor build quality and have poor gas milage.
I once drove a 96 Jeep Cherokee and it was awful to drive and the claustrophobic interior(like hummers).

Loads of fun. You can get anywhere you want to go and even a few places you dont want to be. As with any vehicle, there are good things and bad things about them, for me the good outweighs the bad.
They are rough riding gas guzzlers and there is almost no room for anything besides yourself and one passenger--which is a good thing, who wants to drive people around anyway?
