My fiance is in the navy, he's almost finished BT, and his A+school will be a year long. I was told that if he does well in it then he will be able to choose shore duty or ship duty. Is that true? I want only a military person to answer this, or a military spouse. PLEASE...

he can count on sea duty first, period. the number of shore duty slots available to a Submariner are few and far between, ESPECIAL:LY for some NUB fresh outta A school.

Anything is possible, but...it always depends on the needs of the Navy. I had so-called "base of preference" after 2 years in Japan on a forward deployed ship. Trouble was, everywhere I wanted to go didn't need me. So I ended up going where they wanted. Many times the choice is what's available at the time you are talking to the detailer (the one who fills the assignments) or what they are trying to fill called a "hot fill." With the computer system, it's a lot easier to see what's coming up and when. Best bet, be flexible and keep a sense of adventure!

1- If you go onto an FBM sub you will make 2 deployments every year. You will be in homeport for about 5 months of every year. 2- Subpay itself is $350. As a sub crewmember you will qualify for a bunch of different pays though subpay is only one of them. 3- No. That is movies, not real life. Laptops are allowed.
