Is it possible to get a used car for around $1000 from a dealer or would you need to find someone privately selling a car?

Its better to get one privately. $1000 goes a long way when buying from a Private party, but not very far with a Dealer.
Used car dealers buy $300 cars, and sell them for $1000

Private parties sell $1000 cars and Get $1000 for them! No overhead, like a used car dealer has.

heres a good example
AVOID 96 and newer cars!! the computer system on them is extra extra picky, and the parts are much more expensive than pre`96 cars. a 10 year old car with a picky computer is a lot of trouble...just hang out here for a while and see.

Private sellers. You will almost never find a dealer who carries cars in that price range who will not screw you hard.

There are rare dealers in low-end cars who aren't scum, but ...they're rare. Ask around locally if you can't find anything private.

General rule of thumb, though: If you aren't spending at least 5000 dollars, don't bother with dealers. You will not get a good deal.

Also, 1000 dollars is a pretty dangerous range for a novice to be shopping in. There are a lot of shitty cars that aren't worth owning in that price range, and without some expertise, you cannot separate the wheat from the chaff. 2-3000 is a lot safer.

Most New Car dealerships that also sell a small selection of used cars usually do not have cars in that price range. But there are a ton of Used Car dealerships that definitely would have something in that range. Also, some big dealerships also have what is called a Wholesale to the public lot. These cars usually have either been in an accident or have had problems or are just old, but they are very very cheap, and if you can find one in good condition then it could be a great deal.
Good Luck

If you want to look online, try craig's list or autotrader. Both sites can let you localize your search, and you can search both dealerships and private listings.

Happy motoring.I wouldn't want a used $1,000 car from a dealer. If it's that cheap, there's a reason. If I couldn't find one from someone I know, I'd just look in the papers. Don't look in free ad papers. If they're too cheap to pay for an ad, they"re probably too cheap to change the oil on time. Look at what the cab companies and police/fire dept. are driving; then get one of those, but a private one. When you find your gem, spend the $15 to get an owner and collision record. If it's been owned by too many, it means they all found something wrong so bad they dumped it. Happy motoring.

At a dealer for $1000, you can get a 1991 Ford Festiva. Buy private or police sale.

Find someone privately to sell you a car. Remember, when buying a car, check for water damage. What I'm talking about is rust under the carpet in the trunk and in the motor. Look around the motor to see if you see any evidence of rust. Raise the carpet in the trunk, look at the bolts, if you see any rust don't purchase. Check out the rest of the vehicle, any signs of rust don't purchase.

no dealer is going to sell a car for a grand. and any car that is advertised for a grand is going to be a sh1tbox.

keep saving and looking, you'll need at least 3 grand for something worthwhile

My guess that if you've only got $1000 to spend for a car, you don't have enough for tax, tags, insurance, gas, oil, and repairs. Wait until you have enough money to not only buy a good car, but to operate and maintain it as well.
