Personally, I think it varies person to person. Situation, to situation. On here, I think its most people just trying to be petty and childish, and get a rise out of others. Some though, as irl are questioning their beliefs themselves. So they feel by converting you, or getting you to believe the way they do, they will be ok. Others, especially christians, have forgotten the true meanings of christianity. I don't know how many times i've said this on here, but the bible tells us to love one another. And judge not lest ye be judged. I think they forget that. I think many christians, take it upon themselves to convert everybody. And they are human, so they get frustrated, and resort to name calling. They think if you call a non believer stupid it will suddenly wake them up and make them realize that they are wrong.

Personally, though I am not perfect and have gotten into arguments, or name called, I try not to. I find it interesting to learn about others beliefs, or lack of. Why they feel that why, and compare and contrast my own beliefs towards theres. Sometimes I learn something, sometimes it opens my mind to things I have not realized. Other times it makes me stronger in my own beliefs, and thank ful that I have them.

Because they are afraid. I'm taking this from my Christian bias, sorry if I offend anyone (not really, if I stir up things I'm a bit happy about it, I want things to change). Atheists hardly ever take any of my points seriously, not because of validity reasons but because it goes against what they believe. I argue science all of the time. What's interesting is if I took all of the responses I got from the 'intelligent' atheists I would be able to take them and have them kill each other over what is right and wrong. Their, scientific facts, are that conflicting. Most of the time they refuse to even address the points I try to make, they insult my intelligence, say I need to go to school, read science text books, and learn before I dare to ask a question. In other words, I'm dumb, they're smart, how dare I question them. I'm sorry, isn't a part of science to question it and find flaws with it so you can change them and make them better? Or destroy the theory, if it doesn't match the evidence.. But they never truly argue what I talk about. Ad hominen attacks are easier than trying to educate a moron like me I guess. My bad.

No one should do that, but we have some degree of agnosticism with our beliefs and keep our minds open to valid criticism.

If it's possible you may be wrong, you should be willing to listen to the arguments of others. Even if they insult you, what they say can't be automatically dismissed because they were uncivil. If you can, try and separate the wheat (valid criticism, if any) from the chaff (stupid insults). A person unwilling to listen to criticism has exposed their own weakness: that they know, in their heart of hearts, that they are likely to be wrong and so avoid criticism.

But still, nobody's going to convince anyone if they can't show a little civility. Just try not to catch yourself calling someone else's argument or statements offensive or insulting when they are *only* trying to point out how you might be wrong.

There is never a good reason to attack someone elses beliefs.

Most of the time, my opinion, is its done out of fear and the fact the attacker doesnt know anything about the other belief system. They just attack without gaining true knowledge first because its easier and makes them feel better.

There are people out there with very bad superiority complexes. They attack other people's beliefs because they think they are better and more intelligent than others. They behave like you're supposed to believe and accept what they say. If you don't, all hell breaks loose! Such people must not be taken seriously.

Personally, I don't take too kindly to people who expect me to believe what they believe. No one is going to tell me what I'm supposed to believe. I don't feel the need to prove myself to them.

Just be glad they're only attacking your beliefs. Some people attack you b/c you're a different color. Its just the nature of things in the world. One day we'll get to the point where people with blue eyes are at war with green eyed people.

I count these three as the biggest reasons that make people attack others' beliefs.

1.) Boredom
2.) The fact that making someone look stupid , does, in some pseudo sadistic way make us feel better about our own self.
3.) Lack of knowledge

Some people are so overly controlling that they feel the need to have anyone and everyone believe what they want and feel is correct.

Or because of small-minded individuals that are incapable of opening their eyes and seeing that there ARE other beliefs that do exist in our world.

People attack my beliefs because they are ignorant, media believing, insecure people. I don't call people of other faiths names or put them down. My philosophy is each to there own, you say tomatoes i say tomatoes, live and let live......

that absolutely does not however media and society play a big role in what people think of your beliefs i highly despise that thought but the world will not change to fit my convenience i have to change for it and hopefully if people actually recognize what they are doing because they are obviously very ignorant towards other people.
