Well, you will get different answers depending upon whether the answerer is pre-trib, mid-trib or post-trib.
I am a Seventh-Day Adventist, and we hold to the post-trib theory as being the most biblically accurate.
Jesus Himself speaks about end-time events in Matthew 24 and Mark 13. The book of Revelation also speaks about end-time events. Many people are confused by the imagery in Revelation, but here's a hint: the definitions of these images can be found in the book of Daniel.
In the book of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream about a multi-mineral statue. The head was made of gold, which represented his kingdom of Babylon. This was to be followed by a lesser kingdom, represented by silver, which was the Medo-Persian empire. After this was a still more inferior kingdom, represented by brass. This was Greece. Greece was then followed by Rome, which was represented by iron. Then the iron empire of Rome would be divided into 10 kingdoms (represented in the 10 toes of the statue). These were the early tribes of Europe that would later become the modern countries of Europe - the Allemani, the Franks, the Burgundians, the Visigoths, the Saxons, Ostrogoths, Heruli, etc.
At the time of the end of these kingdoms (the ends of the toes), it was said that a "mountain carved out without hands" smote the statue on its feet and destroyed the whole statue. This mountain represented God's kingdom, which would destroy all trace of the previous kingdoms of Man, and set up a new Kingdom on the Earth. We are currently living in the time of the "end of the toenails" of the statue.
According to post-trib theory, Christ will return soon in a very visible, very audible way in the clouds, with all the angels of Heaven. It will not be "silent" at all. It also says that "every eye will see Him." This will not be some silent, invisible rapture like the pre-trib folks portray. Everyone will see it. Those who are dead in Christ will rise from their graves. Those who are saved and alive at the time will be transformed into new, physical bodies. The living and the resurrected dead will be "caught up" to meet the Lord in the air. The wicked living will be slain by the brightness of His coming, and the wicked dead will remain dead for another 1,000 years. During this millennium, Satan will be bound on a dark, desolate Earth to behold the results of his rebellion against God. He will have no one to tempt, because everyone on Earth will either be dead or with God. He will be imprisoned here.
The Saved will enjoy communion with God and each other in the New Jerusalem, where they will be able to participate in the judgment of the lost. This way, everyone will be able to see all the times in a lost person's life when he turned God away, and they will see that His judgment is just. This will allow people to come to terms with family members and friends who aren't in Heaven. God will wipe away all tears from their eyes.
After the Millennium is over, the New Jerusalem will return to Earth for the judgment of the Wicked. The wicked dead of all ages (that's a LOT of people) will surround the city. Satan will lead them in an attack against the city, but before they can do anything, fire will fall down from Heaven and consume them all. They will not be tortured forever, but their destruction will be permanent. Even Satan will be burned up, and sin will forever be gone. Every trace of sin and sinners will be purged from the planet.
When the fire eventually burns itself out, God will set to re-creating the Earth the way it was in the beginning, before Adam and Eve lost it. He will re-create all the animals, and we the Saved will be allowed to live in it, and make our homes and grow our own food. All the animals will be tame, even ones that were formerly vicious.
Another point in post-trib theory is that the Saved will not be 'caught up/raptured" prior to the final period of tribulation on the planet. The Bible says that "for the sake of the elect, that time will be shortened". Why would it need to be shortened if the elect were already in Heaven? However, the saved will be protected through the tribulation, just as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were protected through the fiery furnace (not FROM it), and Daniel was protected through the lion's den (not FROM it). Likewise, we will go through the tribulation, but be protected. And it will not be "seven years of tribulation", since that phrase occurs nowhere in the Bible, and it also said that the tribulation would be "shortened". Seven years is not shortened! The misunderstanding comes from a misinterpretation of Daniel's 70 week prophecy. Pre-trib people chop the 70th week off and place it at the end of time. Post-trib people leave it right where it belongs, after the 69th week. In Bible prophecy, one prophetic day = one literal year. Without getting too technical, the 70th week of prophecy (seven literal years) occur between the beginning of Christ's ministry (his baptism in AD 27) and the stoning of Stephen in AD 34, when the gospel was to go out to the Gentiles. Prophecy also states that "in the middle of the week [3-1/2 years], the Messiah would be cut off, but not for Himself". It was at the 3-1/2 year mark that Christ was crucified, but not for any sin He had committed.
I hope this helps, sorry, I didn't want to write a book, but it's complex! Visit your local Adventist church and ask them to explain it to you in more detail.
